Delicious Dev Report #3! - Dondo

Howdy humans! It's pablo here to bring you today's dev update this one being a spotlight on Dondo - Master of the Bear-Claw Fist! and how he came to be.

So to begin with let's start off with how it was even decide we would have a donut fighter. It was Pat's master stroke of an idea to use the emojis as a guide in determining which foods would be represented in the roster of fighters. I think he just likes emojis that much (confirmed), but I thought the food represented in emojis would be the most well known ones which would ensure we maintained a very recognizable cast of characters.

so with this declaration it was decided that a donut would join the rank of champions.

Iteration/Evolution

What follows is something that wasn't meant to be seen by anyone (not even Pat), but i'll share it with you here for your amusement.
I drew this initial sketch for the donut fighter as I was falling asleep at my desk ( note the lines trailing off the legs)

The following day I drew this thumbnail of him while I discussed details about the other champs with Pat. With this version you can see the eyes slowly migrating to the top of the head from the side of the head as they were originally. This version also had me introducing stale donuts on the arm that would serve the same function as iron rings, classic training tools  you would see in  70s Kung Fu films.

With this version in addition to adding color, I tried to think of ways to make this donut less generic. Frosting was introduced to give more color to the character and to simulate a hairline and by using 2 sprinkles as eyebrows. Initially I liked the hole as the mouth but if this fighter were ever to show some expression or talk it wouldn't look very good and also break the  donut silhouette.

Another big thing that I felt needed changing in the previous version was the lack of flexibility I believed this character to have. Without a torso his range of movement seemed limited so I gave him one! More frosting was added to his chest to give him obvious pecs and abs in a stylized way almost mimicking plates of armor. The hairline frosting on the face was made uniform with no variation, giving it an equal spread and the dough was lightened up to be more saturated.

Which brings us to the most recent iteration of the character:

I think I should reintroduce more obvious sprinkles as eyebrows in my next update....

Dondo's name came from the combining of Don(ut) Do(jo) which I also wanted to be the name of the shop Dondo fights for, but Pat came up with the much punnier shop title of "Do-Jo."

Peep Pat's test Dondo model!

And with that we conclude today's Delicious Dev Report!

wow great post, really insightful. maybe next time add more details on colors and outfit choices. maybe also discuss how you got from the food to the initial draft, the process of making anthropomorphic food is fascinating?
